50 years in 2007
2007 is our 50th year in business.
Scientific & Chemical Supplies Ltd was founded in 1957 by Mr J R Turton MPS, a pharmacist and Mr K H Cartland, an ex Spitfire pilot. Their sons are the current chairman and managing director.
The company started in Sedgley, in the heart of the Black Country in the West Midlands, supplying a large number of foundries, metal finishing companies, and the automotive industry. In 1988 it moved to Chestom Road, Bilston, West Midlands, and in 1996 it acquired neighbouring properties and moved the head office to Carlton House, Livingstone Road.
The business has grown spectacularly in the last fifteen years.
In late 1997 it acquired Hogg Laboratory Supplies Ltd to consolidate its position in the secondary and tertiary education science equipment market.
The company won two major blue chip sole supply contracts in 1999, and established branches in Aberdeen and Cork to support a growing industrial laboratory supplies business.
In 2001 the company acquired the laboratory distribution business of A. J. Beveridge part of Bunzl plc, based in Edinburgh.
The Bilston operation acquired neighbouring properties to expand storage capacity.
In 2006 further neighbouring properties in Bilston were acquired and refurbished, creating one larger warehouse. Additional offices are now on the list, and planned later in 2007/early 2008.
Aberdeen
Opened in 1999 to serve a large sole supply contract for the petro-chemical business.
Cork
Opened in June 1999 and has particular expertise in the dairy and pharmaceutical markets.
Paisley
In 2002 the business of R&J Wood Ltd in Paisley was acquired, and became the third branch supporting local customers. R&J Wood Ltd were a well established family owned business, and has been trading since 1948.
